Excerpts from Fox32Chicago.com:
More than 100 firefighters worked through the night on Wednesday to tackle a major fire at Bay Marine, a boat storage facility located in Waukegan. The incident began around 8 p.m., when firefighters were alerted by an automatic alarm and arrived to find flames inside the building at 3 E. Madison St. The fire quickly escalated due to freezing temperatures and the challenging layout of the facility, which housed approximately 70 large boats.
As the situation worsened, the fire was upgraded to a fourth alarm, making it one of the more severe incidents handled by local emergency services. Despite the difficult conditions, crews managed to bring the fire under control by 2:30 a.m. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Larry Shapiro shared additional details about the response, noting that Waukegan Fire Department deployed Engine 65, a 2021 Rosenbauer Panther 6×6 ARFF unit from the Waukegan Airport, to apply foam inside the structure. This specialized vehicle is commonly used for high-risk fires involving flammable materials, making it a critical asset in this case.
A photo taken by Larry Shapiro captures the moment the ARFF unit was actively engaged in the firefighting effort. The image highlights the intensity of the operation and the importance of having the right equipment on scene.
The fire left significant damage to the facility, but thanks to the quick response and coordination between multiple departments, the spread of the fire was effectively contained. Residents in the area were advised to stay alert and avoid the area until further notice.
This incident underscores the importance of preparedness and the crucial role of emergency responders in handling complex and dangerous situations. As the investigation continues, officials will be looking into the root cause of the fire to prevent similar incidents in the future.
