Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The proposed location of a third fire station for the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District has sparked concerns among officials in the Barrington School District 220, particularly regarding increased traffic and noise levels.

The fire protection district recently acquired an acre of land at 36 E. Dundee Road, which includes an existing home, for $500,000. This property is situated between Barrington Middle School — Prairie Campus and the Early Learning Center, both part of District 220.

According to the fire district, the site will serve as their third station but will operate with limited resources. However, school officials are worried about potential traffic congestion during morning and afternoon drop-offs and pickups, as well as the risk of sirens disrupting young students during class time.

The school district had originally considered purchasing the property to improve traffic flow between the two buildings, but now they are working closely with the fire department to find a solution that addresses their concerns.

The new station will not include traditional fire trucks. Instead, it may house administrative offices and sleeping quarters for firefighters on duty. The primary focus will be on rapid response for medical emergencies, especially heart attacks and strokes, which make up around 85% of the district’s calls.

A specialized SUV equipped with life support systems will be stationed there to provide immediate care. According to Keith Hanson, board president of the fire district, the key to treating these emergencies is having two trained personnel on scene quickly to begin CPR or stroke treatment.

To address the school district’s concerns, the fire department plans to limit the use of the SUV to about two emergency calls per day. Sirens will only be used when necessary to clear traffic, according to Hanson.

Fire Chief Jim Kreher emphasized that the new station will significantly improve response times across the district's 48-square-mile area. It will also support local fire departments in Barrington and Palatine Rural Fire Protection District.

While the current plan is to operate the station with minimal staff and equipment, Hanson noted that future expansion is possible. The district has already allocated $2 million to upgrade the facility and open it by spring.
