According to the Chicago Tribune, the pilot of the small plane was able to stand and speak with emergency crews after the crash. The pilot, identified as William Yamokoski, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for evaluation. As of 5:10 p.m., he was in the emergency room, though hospital officials were unsure if he would be admitted overnight.

The pilot of a small experimental plane was able to stand and talk to emergency crews after crashing near the lakefront on the Southeast Side, police said.

The pilot, William Yamokoski, remained in the emergency room of Northwestern Memorial Hospital as of 5:10 p.m., according to a spokeswoman for the hospital, who said she did not know if he would be admitted overnight.

Calls started coming in about 1:37 p.m. about the crash of the single-engine plane near 9500 S. Crilly Drive, near a Chicago Police heliport, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

The pilot appeared to be a man in his mid 40s or 50 who was standing outside the plane when emergency crews got there, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Joe Roccasalva.
