Background

Recycled PET bottle flakes are produced from waste beverage bottles through sorting, crushing, washing, and drying processes. This means that recycled PET bottle flakes can be manufactured wherever there is a demand for beverages. As one of the main markets for imported recycled PET bottle flakes, China imports more than 10–13 million tons of these materials annually.

However, in 2017, China implemented stricter environmental regulations, completely banning the import of waste plastics, including recycled PET in any form such as bales or flakes. According to the new rules, only granules or chips of recycled plastics are allowed to be imported. Therefore, it has become essential to re-pelletize the recycled PET bottle flakes for recyclers.

This shift in policy has created a growing need for efficient re-pelletizing systems. The process must ensure high-quality output while adhering to strict environmental standards. Below are some key challenges and solutions in the re-pelletizing process.

  • The system combines modular processing sections with a twin-screw extruder and an automatic three-stage Roots vacuum pump set. This ensures a vacuum pressure of up to -0.1MPa, effectively removing volatiles and minimizing IV value reduction.

  • Optimized process steps and specialized screw design allow continuous and efficient transformation of PET flakes from solid to liquid state, preventing yellowing caused by dead zones or local overheating.
  • The strands pelletizing system is commonly used for PET pelletizing. Strands exiting the extruder die are manually guided into a water trough for cooling, then dried with an air knife and cut into granules. This method requires skilled labor and is suitable for capacities below 600kg/h.
  • For high-capacity applications, an automated underwater pelletizing system is recommended to ensure consistent output and improved automation.
