Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com: The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District is considering a new location for its third fire station, but the proposed site has raised concerns among local school officials. The chosen property, located at 36 E. Dundee Road between Barrington Middle School — Prairie Campus and the Early Learning Center, has sparked worries about increased traffic and noise near the schools. The fire district recently purchased an acre of land that includes an existing home for $500,000. While the plan is to convert the home into a small fire station, it will not house full-time fire trucks. Instead, the facility is expected to serve as an administrative hub and provide sleeping quarters for on-duty firefighters. Officials from Barrington School District 220 are concerned about potential disruptions during peak times, such as morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups. Additionally, the sound of sirens could interfere with classroom activities, especially for younger students. To address these issues, the school district is working closely with the fire protection district to find solutions that minimize impact on daily operations. The new station is intended to improve emergency response times, particularly for critical medical calls like heart attacks and strokes, which account for around 85% of the district’s incidents. Rather than a traditional fire truck, the station would use an SUV equipped with life support systems to quickly transport patients to hospitals. Keith Hanson, president of the fire district board, emphasized the importance of rapid response in such cases. “The key is getting two people on scene quickly to start CPR or stroke treatment,†he said. He also noted that the SUV would be used for only about two emergency calls per day, and sirens would be reserved for situations where they’re necessary to clear traffic. Fire Chief Jim Kreher added that the new station will help cover a large area of 48 square miles, allowing for more efficient service to residents. It will also assist nearby departments, including the Barrington and Palatine Rural Fire Protection Districts. While the current plan is limited, the fire district is considering future expansion, potentially adding more staff and equipment. For now, the board has allocated $2 million to renovate the site and open it by spring. The collaboration between the fire district and the school system continues as both parties work toward a balanced solution that meets community needs.
