We previously mentioned that the Tinley Park Fire Department has placed an order for a new aerial ladder truck. This development comes as the local community continues to support the department through long-standing fundraising traditions.

The TribLocal recently published an article detailing how the new fire truck is being funded. The piece highlights the ongoing partnership between the village and the Tinley Park Fire Department Association, which has played a key role in keeping costs manageable for taxpayers.

Regular donations from Tinley Park residents have remained crucial to the fire department’s operations, even over 100 years after the town first raised funds for firefighters. Recently, the Village Board approved the purchase of a new ladder truck for $850,000. However, thanks to the Fire Department Association, only half of the cost will come from local tax dollars.

The association will cover $425,000 of the total price using funds raised through its annual dinner dance and other fundraising efforts—a tradition that began in 1902. “It’s helped us keep costs to the taxpayers down, so we certainly appreciate all the individual contributions towards that,” said Trustee Brian Maher, who leads the Public Safety Committee.

Although the department now employs over 100 part-time firefighters, it originally started as a volunteer force that depended on community support. Despite many changes since its founding in 1901, the level of community backing has remained strong. “It kind of goes back to when they were running a true volunteer fire department and had to raise money to buy equipment,” said firefighter and association president Mike Hughes.

The first Annual Firefighters Dance in 1902 raised just $15.15 for the department, but today, the event is still held every January and remains one of the association’s most significant fundraisers. “We’re a very blessed organization,” Hughes added. “It’s a great town with a lot of pride. What the community does for us is amazing.”

The association regularly helps fund essential equipment, including ladder trucks and fire engines. Their most recent major purchase was a $401,000 fire engine in 2007. Because of such large expenses, the village often shares the cost. Without the association’s fundraising efforts, Maher noted, the village would have no choice but to rely entirely on tax dollars.
