We previously mentioned that the Tinley Park Fire Department has placed an order for a new aerial ladder truck. This development has sparked renewed interest in how the department continues to fund its essential equipment and operations.

The TribLocal recently published an article that delves into the funding behind this new purchase, highlighting the long-standing partnership between the fire department and the local community.

For over a century, regular donations from Tinley Park residents have played a crucial role in supporting the fire department, even as the organization has evolved from a volunteer force to a professional municipal department.

Last month, the Village Board approved the purchase of a new ladder truck for $850,000. However, thanks to the efforts of the Tinley Park Fire Department Association, only half of the cost will come from taxpayer funds. The association will cover the remaining $425,000 through fundraising events like its annual dinner dance—a tradition that began in 1902.

“This helps keep costs down for our residents, and we’re truly grateful for the support,” said Trustee Brian Maher, who leads the Public Safety Committee.

While the department now employs over 100 part-time firefighters, it originally operated as a volunteer unit that depended entirely on community contributions. Despite all the changes over the years, one thing remains constant: the strong community backing.

“It goes back to when they were a volunteer department and had to raise money for equipment,” explained Mike Hughes, a firefighter and president of the association.

The first Annual Firefighters Dance in 1902 raised just $15.15, but today, the event is still held every January and remains one of the most significant fundraisers for the department.

“We’re really lucky to be part of such a supportive town,” Hughes said. “The pride and generosity people show us are amazing.”

The association regularly contributes to the purchase of essential equipment, including fire engines and ladder trucks. Their last major purchase was a fire engine in 2007, which cost $401,000. Because of these efforts, the village doesn’t have to rely solely on tax dollars for large purchases.
