Japan Seiko (NSK) has introduced a compact actuator designed for outboard engines, offering improved shifting performance. By integrating high-efficiency automotive ball screws and high-output motors, the actuator enhances both shifting capacity and responsiveness while maintaining a smaller footprint. This advanced component is already in commercial use on Yamaha Engine's "F350" outboard motor, which delivers 350 horsepower.
Traditionally, large vessels were powered by inboard engines, where the engine is mounted inside the hull. However, outboard engines offer easier installation and maintenance, allowing more space to be utilized within the ship. As a result, their popularity is growing. When mechanical shifting systems are used, the long distance between the driver’s seat and the outboard motor requires extended cables, making it challenging to implement in vessels with multiple engines or many seats. These limitations have led to an increasing adoption of wire-controlled systems in larger ships. Similarly, the trend is expected to expand to medium-sized vessels in the future.
To meet the demand for higher power and wire-controlled systems, Seiko has developed a high-performance actuator capable of operating reliably in harsh environments. The actuator features a ball screw with a 90% conversion efficiency, significantly reducing energy loss and enabling faster, more powerful shifts—even for high-output outboard motors. Its design also ensures smooth and reliable gear changes by generating thrusts that surpass human capability.
Given the extreme heat and vibration from direct engine mounting, this version uses a highly vibration-resistant motor and a non-contact position sensor. To prevent water ingress and reduce electromagnetic interference from sonar and wireless signals, the metal housing is sealed and equipped with waterproof seals and magnetic shielding. Additionally, a dual-sensor system enhances overall reliability, ensuring consistent performance under tough conditions.
