The average drop of 40,000 yuan import models rushed down to attack domestic cars

As the "May 1" holiday approaches, a wave of price reductions has swept through the imported car market, with numerous models priced over 200,000 yuan competing for a share of the Golden Week consumer rush. This trend includes popular models like the Skoda Fabia, BMW Mini Cooper, and Hyundai Cool Coupe, all experiencing price drops of around 40,000 yuan. The average reduction is significant, and the downward trend in car prices seems difficult to reverse. While budget-friendly, stylish models from low-cost imports were previously not part of the price-cutting list, this changed just before the holiday. The "May 1" Golden Week is typically a peak time for car sales, and many manufacturers are eager to capture a portion of this lucrative market. Even high-end models valued at over 300,000 yuan have joined the competition. For instance, the BMW Mini Cooper, which once held a price of 410,000 yuan, has recently dropped to 375,000 yuan. According to reports, the price cuts are not due to inventory pressure or internal competition but rather a strategic move to gain market share. It's reported that while the Mini Cooper is still being booked, customers can expect delivery within a week or so. Another model that’s been sold at holiday prices is the Hyundai Coupe Sports Car. Although it's not commonly seen on the road, its price of over 200,000 yuan makes it a favorite among young buyers. The lowest price for the 2004 Cool model has now fallen to 230,000 yuan. Some dealers have limited stock, and certain colors require advance booking. However, a small batch of new Coupe models is expected to arrive by the end of the month. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7-liter SUV, another popular model in the domestic market, has also seen a price drop. Once priced near 320,000 yuan, it now sits at 280,000 yuan. These price cuts align with the competitive pricing of domestically produced vehicles and are influenced by the potential cancellation of import licenses next year. The market is showing a clear differentiation: high-end luxury cars costing over one million yuan, and more affordable models priced between 200,000 to 300,000 yuan. Among these, the Skoda brand stands out as a representative of low-priced imported cars. Once a strong player in the market due to its performance, Skoda has struggled after domestic brands reduced their prices, making them more competitive in terms of value. As a result, imported Skoda models are now significantly more expensive than their domestic counterparts, leading to a decline in market share. Recently, Skoda launched the "Thunder" model in China, targeting mid-range segments where competition is less intense. The 2.8-liter prestige model was originally priced at 479,900 yuan, but it has now been reduced to 439,800 yuan, marking a drop of 40,100 yuan. The luxury version also saw a reduction, from 430,000 yuan to 403,000 yuan, a decrease of 27,000 yuan. This move is seen as an effort to reposition itself in the market. While the price war continues, with competitors also engaging in model and service battles, Skoda’s success will ultimately depend on how well it performs in the real market.
