As many of you already know, earlier today we shared the news about my upcoming departure as CEO. This has been a deeply personal decision for me, and I wanted to take this moment to share my thoughts directly with all of you. Over the past couple of years, I’ve been discussing with the board the idea of stepping away from the role of CEO, and today marks the official announcement that I will indeed be leaving. I’m thrilled to pass the torch to Amar and Andrew, two individuals whose leadership and capabilities I trust wholeheartedly. They’re more than ready to guide the company forward during this transition, and I’m confident that either would make an excellent choice as the next CEO. Additionally, I’ll remain on the board and will be here to offer my support throughout this process.
Autodesk has been my life for nearly a decade and a half, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve achieved together. The company is thriving, and the financial markets are recognizing our progress. Our leadership team is strong, and our strategic shift toward a subscription-based model is proving successful. With our transition to the cloud underway and our relationships with activist investors resolved, now feels like the perfect time for both me and the company to move forward.
Let me be clear—I’m not leaving to spend more time with my family; while I love them dearly, my family hasn’t exactly been clamoring for more of my attention. Instead, I’m excited to return to my workshop, where I can tinker with my robots and explore other projects close to my heart. There’s still so much I want to accomplish, and I’ll have more to share about my future plans in the coming months.
Leading Autodesk has been an immense privilege, and I’m deeply grateful for the chance to work alongside such brilliant, passionate individuals. Together, we’ve built something extraordinary, creating tools that have fundamentally transformed how industries operate worldwide.
When I first became CEO, people often asked how I envisioned defining Autodesk. My response was usually cryptic: “Great, good, and important.†Great companies excel financially, good ones uphold strong values and cultures, and important ones leave a lasting impact on the world. Achieving all three is no easy feat, but I believe we’ve done just that under my watch.
To start with, Autodesk’s financial performance speaks volumes. Fourteen years ago, when we formed our new executive team, we set out to improve every financial metric imaginable. After the 2009 economic downturn, our investors saw a 6x return. Back then, our market cap was just over $2 billion; today, it’s more than $18 billion. Yet, we’ve always prioritized long-term sustainability over short-term gains—a philosophy I firmly believe leads to enduring success.
On the “good†front, we’ve established a workplace culture rooted in diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect. Each day, you embody these values through your actions, reinforcing why we receive accolades annually for our exceptional workplace environment.
Finally, there’s the matter of importance. As the creators of the tools used by designers, builders, and manufacturers globally, we’ve left an indelible mark on countless industries. Whether it’s skyscrapers, automobiles, or blockbuster films, our software has played a pivotal role in shaping the world around us. I’m proud of the trust our customers place in us, and I’ll forever cherish the legacy we’ve built together.
Before I sign off, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to those who’ve shaped my journey and Autodesk’s success. First, Carol Bartz deserves special mention for believing in me when others doubted. She taught me invaluable lessons and laid the foundation we built upon. To our customers, thank you for inspiring us daily. Without you, we wouldn’t exist. Likewise, our partners deserve recognition for their unwavering commitment to representing us globally. Our long-term shareholders, too, deserve thanks for supporting our vision of sustainable growth.
Most importantly, I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the incredible employees who’ve made Autodesk what it is today. As CEO, I’ve sometimes taken undue credit—or blame—but I’ve never forgotten that it’s you—the unsung heroes—who make it all happen. Your hard work, dedication, and camaraderie mean everything to me, and I’ll miss our interactions the most.
In closing, I hope I’ve lived up to my promise as a leader—to envision possibilities and summon the courage to pursue them. None of this would have been possible without each of you. Thank you for everything.
Warm regards,
Carl
