Today at the Fab 11 conference held at MIT, there was some big news from Autodesk and the Fab Foundation. They announced that Autodesk is officially a Fab Sponsor, and they’re joining forces to provide access to Autodesk’s cloud and mobile software for Fab Labs and their members. Right now, there are over 500 Fab Labs spread across the globe.

Samir Hanna, Vice President and General Manager of Autodesk’s Consumer & 3D Printing Group, mentioned, "Autodesk and Fab Lab both believe in the critical role digital fabrication plays in shaping the future of manufacturing. Digital fabrication is creating new opportunities for creators and producers to develop advanced, personalized, and connected products. The Fab Lab community continues to demonstrate this all over the world." He further explained, "Without digital design tools, digital fabrication isn’t possible, and we want the Fab Lab community to have access to top-notch cloud and mobile design software to help overcome design challenges and bring their ideas to fruition."
As of today, Autodesk is offering free access and training for the following software to the global Fab Lab community:
- **Tinkercad**: A user-friendly, web-based 3D design and modeling tool perfect for everyone. Tinkercad is robust yet straightforward, enabling users to turn their imagination into designs within minutes, and directly connect to 3D printing services within the app.
- **123D Circuits**: This free online tool lets users design electronic projects with Arduino, create custom PCB boards, and test them in real-time simulations.
- **Fusion 360**: Fusion 360 integrates CAD, CAM, and CAE in the cloud. It’s an adaptable, interconnected, and accessible platform tailored for modern product design and production methods.
This software is now part of the Fab Lab inventory list and will be integrated into the Fab Academy curriculum. Additionally, Autodesk will conduct a workshop at Fab 11 to assist Fab Lab members in getting started with the software. Participants will discover how, using the free Autodesk software provided, they can 3D scan a limb, design a prosthetic, and even make it robotic.
Beyond the free Autodesk software, Fab Lab members will also enjoy an exclusive benefit:
- A 10% discount on the new Autodesk Basic Kit, which combines hardware and software to create innovative electronics. For more details, [click here][i].
Sherry Lassiter, President of the Fab Foundation, expressed her excitement about the expanded global partnership between Fab Lab and Autodesk. She stated, "Fab Lab and Autodesk have collaborated locally for years, and we’re thrilled to take this relationship global. Combining Autodesk’s intuitive and powerful software with Fab Lab’s worldwide network of fabrication facilities will allow us to support and empower even more makers to address challenges and create solutions globally."

Moreover, Autodesk has generously donated to Fab Lab to support its mission of providing access to 3D printing, laser cutting, and other digital fabrication tools for STEM education, innovation, startup creation, job creation, and training.
