This message is from Steve Redick: The photo with Big John in the background is one of the few that shows both water cannons operating at the same time. Usually, they couldn’t get enough water pressure to use both. Also, note the 2000-GPM LaFrances, which often used both ports on the hydrant. There was a strict rule that no other pumper could share a hydrant with a 2,000-gallon rig, allowing them to fully utilize both steamer ports. These photos were in terrible condition—colors were off, and the images were faded. I was surprised by how much I was able to restore. They’re not perfect, but at least they're now usable. I think if I had converted them to black and white, they would have looked near perfect. Enjoy the history. After returning from Arkansas, I brought back a lot of my dad’s collection. Among the items was a set of 3x5 color prints from a fire that took place on May 11, 1974, which he and I attended together. It was a cold storage warehouse, and I remember it burning for days. At some point, the building collapsed onto an adjacent structure, triggering another extra alarm. We arrived well after the initial response and had the chance to tour the fireground, capturing these images of some classic fire apparatus in action.
