Niles firefighters received an emergency call to respond to 8115 Ottawa Avenue on Tuesday around 1:30 PM (May 12, 2015). When the first responders arrived, they found heavy flames and thick smoke billowing from the back of the two-story house. They quickly upgraded the situation to Code 4 (working fire). There had been a report of someone trapped on the second floor; however, thanks to the quick actions of the neighbors on the ground, the resident managed to jump out of the window with only minor injuries.
Access to the rear of the property was surprisingly easy, as there is a commercial parking lot just behind the house off Milwaukee Avenue. While the Niles units were preparing to enter from the front, Morton Grove Engine 5, supported by North Maine Engine 1, took action by deploying their deck gun from the back. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes.
Mutual aid support came from multiple neighboring departments including Glenview’s Ambulance 7 and Truck 14, Des Plaines Truck 61, Morton Grove Battalion 4, Engine 5, and Squad 4, Lincolnwood Ambulance 15, North Maine’s Engine 1 and Ambulance 1, along with various units from Niles such as Engine 2, Engine 3, Truck 2, Battalion 2, Ambulance 2, and Ambulance 3.
Attached are several images capturing the scene. One shows Niles FD Engine 2R (Steve Redick photo), another highlights Pierce fire trucks at the fire scene (Larry Shapiro photo), while others depict Spartan ERV fire engines, a Pierce Dash CF PUC tower ladder, hose attached to a fire hydrant, and more (all Larry Shapiro photos unless otherwise noted). There are also shots showing the aftermath of the fire and the firefighters post-operation (Steve Redick photos).
