Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC2974, an EEPROM-based power manager that implements complete digital power system management with four or more power rails. The LTC2974 uses an I2C interface and PMBus command set to monitor and control positive or negative power supplies, providing fast fault finding and debugging capabilities during power system design, development, production, and fault analysis. Any power supply with run pins can be sorted and controlled using trace or time-based events. The LTC2974's four channels simultaneously monitor voltage and current as well as external temperature, so the user can compensate for the RDS(ON) or inductor DCR of the shift MOSFET. Each power supply can be margined and fine-tuned with temperature changes, using a digital servo loop to measure rail voltage and continuously adjust to maintain accuracy. All power functions of the LTC2974 are performed with no discounts, and the overall unadjusted error is better than 0.25. Users can intuitively configure and interrogate the LTC2974's registers, user settings, and fault logs with the powerful LTpowerPlayTM GUI. For applications that require more than four power supplies, the LTC2974 can be cascaded with a single-wire synchronous bus, allowing fault correlation to be established across multiple devices sharing a faulty bus. The LTC2974 is suitable for a wide range of applications, including uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), automotive, medical, video and networking applications. The LTC2974 integrates key cell components such as differential measurement and regulation, high resolution data converters, high-storage EEPROM and a high-precision reference for digital management of pure analog power systems. The programmable watchdog timer provides monitoring of external microcontrollers, FPGAs, and ASICs. All four channels are fully functional and have dedicated monitoring, monitoring, sequencing, margining, fine-tuning, and fault protection. The black box fault record provides a way to diagnose key parameters stored in the EEPROM at the time of the fault.
