Danny Nelms recently shared more details about the new home for the South Elgin fire engine. This particular Seagrave engine had previously been part of the South Elgin Fire Department but had been stationed in Pennsylvania for several years. A few weeks back, it went up for sale. However, after the devastating tornado hit Mayfield and Graves County, Kentucky, the Penn Forest Volunteer Fire Company #2 made an incredible decision. They chose to donate this rig to the Mayfield/Graves County Fire and Rescue Squad, who lost their fire station and several pieces of equipment during the disaster.
The engine was carefully loaded onto a flatbed trailer and set off towards Kentucky late on December 16th. It’s heartwarming to see how communities can come together in times of crisis, especially when resources are scarce.
Looking at the picture of this Seagrave engine, it's hard not to feel a sense of nostalgia. The one we found in our archives looks strikingly similar—South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District Engine 1, a 1987 model. Larry Shapiro captured its essence beautifully in his photograph. This engine, much like its counterpart now heading to Kentucky, has likely seen countless calls over the decades, serving the community faithfully.
It's inspiring to see such generosity from the Penn Forest team. Their act of kindness will undoubtedly make a significant difference for the Mayfield/Graves County squad as they work to rebuild. These engines aren’t just pieces of machinery; they’re symbols of resilience and hope, standing tall even when everything around them seems to crumble.
