Danny Nelms recently shared some updates about the new home of the South Elgin fire engine. This particular Seagrave engine had been part of the South Elgin Fire Department before spending the past few years in Pennsylvania. A few weeks back, it went up for sale. However, given the immense destruction caused by the tornado in Mayfield, Graves County, Kentucky, the Penn Forest Volunteer Fire Company #2 made a generous decision. They chose to donate this firefighting vehicle to the Mayfield/Graves County Fire and Rescue Squad, which lost their fire station and several pieces of equipment during the disaster.
The Seagrave engine was carefully loaded onto a flatbed trailer and set off for Kentucky late on December 16th. It’s heartwarming to see how communities come together in times of need, turning what could have been just another transaction into an act of solidarity and support.
Looking back at our archives, we found a similar South Elgin engine. The image below shows the Engine 1 from the South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District, a 1987 Seagrave model captured in one of Larry Shapiro's iconic photos. It’s fascinating to see how these vehicles have played crucial roles in keeping communities safe over the years.

This story is a perfect example of resilience and generosity. As the donated engine arrives in Kentucky, it carries not only its firefighting capabilities but also the hope and support from a community thousands of miles away. It’s inspiring to see how such acts can bridge distances and bring people closer, especially during challenging times.
If you’ve ever witnessed or been part of efforts like these, feel free to share your thoughts or experiences in the comments below. Let’s continue to celebrate and encourage the spirit of giving within our communities!
