A unanimous agreement approved by the village board last Tuesday allows Sheets to continue as Oak Lawn's fire chief while also taking on the role of acting chief for the Chicago Ridge Fire Department through 2016. The Chicago Ridge Village Board is expected to formally approve the arrangement at its meeting on July 15, according to Oak Lawn Village Manager Larry Deetjen. Deetjen explained that Chicago Ridge Mayor Chuck Tokar reached out to Oak Lawn with the idea of Sheets serving both communities. However, Tokar was unavailable for comment on Tuesday night regarding the potential transition. This development follows the recent resignation of Chicago Ridge Fire Chief Robert Muszynski, who cited "personal differences" with local officials—particularly Tokar—over proposed changes to the department’s structure. Several trustees from Chicago Ridge have indicated that Muszynski stepped down at Tokar’s suggestion, though the village board ultimately accepted his resignation last month. Muszynski’s departure came just weeks after the village board encouraged Tokar to explore more efficient ways to provide firefighting and ambulance services. This has raised concerns among firefighters, who fear job losses or even the possibility of the department being replaced by a private service or merged into a fire protection district. Last month, Christ Schmelzer, president of Chicago Ridge Professional Firefighters Local 3098, described the atmosphere in the firehouse as tense following Muszynski’s exit and the ongoing uncertainty around the department’s future.
