A R175A diesel engine experienced difficulty starting before the scheduled overhaul, during which the cylinder liner, piston, piston rings, valves, valve seats, and connecting rod were replaced. Additionally, three precision couplings were installed. Despite these maintenance efforts, the engine still had trouble starting and required significant effort to start. Once running, there was no noticeable increase in engine speed when fueling. Upon inspection, it was found that the oil pump pressure was insufficient. Further examination of the fuel pump revealed that the valve gasket was severely scratched and had even fractured. It turned out that during the replacement of the original valve, the gasket had been accidentally broken while using a screwdriver to pry it out. This caused a misalignment between the high and low-pressure oil chambers in the fuel pump, leading to the failure. After replacing the oil valve gasket, the issue was resolved. However, it was noted that the new gasket was installed with excessive pressure, causing it to reduce in diameter and become tightly seated in the valve seat, making it prone to damage when prying. Therefore, whenever replacing the oil valve, it is recommended to replace the gasket at the same time to avoid future issues. This experience highlights the importance of careful handling during maintenance to prevent unnecessary damage and ensure proper operation.
