A R175A diesel engine experienced difficulty starting before the scheduled overhaul, during which the cylinder liner, piston, piston rings, valves, valve seats, and connecting rod were replaced. Three precision couplings were also installed. However, despite these efforts, the engine still had trouble starting and ran roughly once started, with no significant increase in speed when fuel was supplied. During the inspection, it was found that the oil pump pressure was insufficient. Further investigation revealed that the decompression pump had a damaged valve gasket, which showed visible scratches and even a fracture.
Upon closer examination, it was discovered that the original valve gasket had been accidentally broken while being removed using a screwdriver. This damage caused high and low-pressure oil leakage in the fuel pump, leading to the malfunction. After replacing the oil valve gasket, the issue was resolved.
It was noted that the new oil valve gasket was installed with higher pressure and had a smaller diameter, making it more prone to deformation and easier to damage when prying. Therefore, it is recommended that whenever the oil valve is replaced, the gasket should be replaced at the same time to ensure proper sealing and prevent future issues. This experience highlights the importance of careful handling during maintenance to avoid unnecessary complications and downtime.
