From excerpts on DailyHerald.com: Schaumburg firefighter Mike Solberg passed away last Friday at the age of 34 after a long and courageous fight against brain cancer. The Schaumburg Professional Firefighters Association shared the news on Facebook late Friday, describing Mike as someone who faced the disease with immense bravery and lived life to the fullest. Fire Chief David Schumann expressed the department's deep sorrow, noting that firefighter honors would be part of Mike's funeral services. Mike, who resided in Park Ridge and was the son of Palatine councilman Greg Solberg, joined the Schaumburg fire department back in October 2012. Just two weeks into his role, severe headaches sent him to the ER, where imaging tests revealed a large brain tumor. Days later, he underwent surgery to remove a grade four glioblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer. Although the cancer initially went into remission, it returned last June, forcing Mike onto light duty while undergoing rehabilitation for occupational and physical therapy. In December, fellow firefighters organized a benefit event for Mike and his family at Durty Nellie’s in Palatine. Mike is survived by his wife Maureen, their young daughter Emma, his parents, a brother, two sisters, and other family members. Visitation will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, at Cumberland Chapels located at 8300 W. Lawrence Ave. in Norridge. Funeral services will start at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home, followed by a Mass at St. Eugene Church, 7598 W. Foster Ave. in Chicago at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 1400 S. Wolf Road in Hillside. Rather than flowers, those wishing to honor Mike can donate to the Schaumburg Firefighter’s Fighting Cancer Pink Tie Ball, either by sending contributions to 950 W. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg IL 60194 or visiting pinktieball4092.com. Thanks, Paul. This heartfelt tribute highlights Mike's inspiring journey and the impact he had on his community and colleagues. His legacy lives on through the efforts of those who continue his mission to support cancer research and awareness.
