At the Bus Expo, Pan Falin, General Manager of Hong Kong Tianbao Transportation Co., Ltd., shared his insights with reporters. He noted that despite its small size, Hong Kong maintains a consistent demand for buses each year. Although Jinlong Bus has made inroads into the local market, the majority of passenger vehicles still come from Europe. According to Pan, this presents a significant opportunity for mainland bus manufacturers looking to expand their presence in Hong Kong.
He pointed out that while mainland-made buses may still lag behind European models in terms of technology, there is no noticeable difference in design or appearance. This is an important point, as aesthetics and brand perception play a key role in the transportation sector.
Pan also highlighted the impact of the euro's appreciation on the Hong Kong market. With most buses being imported from Europe, rising costs due to currency fluctuations have placed additional financial pressure on local operators. In this context, mainland manufacturers could gain a competitive edge by offering cost-effective alternatives that meet the specific needs of Hong Kong’s transport industry.
He emphasized that understanding local requirements—such as safety standards, operational efficiency, and passenger comfort—will be crucial for mainland companies aiming to capture a larger share of the market. As the situation continues to evolve, he believes now is the right time for mainland bus makers to step in and seize new business opportunities.
