At the Bus Expo, Pan Falin, General Manager of Hong Kong Tianbao Transportation Co., Ltd., shared his insights with reporters. He noted that despite its small size, Hong Kong maintains a consistent demand for buses each year. Although Jinlong Bus has made inroads into the local market, the majority of passenger vehicles still come from Europe. This, according to Pan, highlights a significant opportunity for mainland bus manufacturers to expand their presence in Hong Kong.
He pointed out that while there may still be technical differences between mainland and European-made buses, the design and styling have reached a comparable level. For the Hong Kong market, he believes that the recent appreciation of the euro has led to higher prices for European vehicles, which are widely used in the city's public transport system. As a result, operating costs for bus companies have increased, creating a favorable environment for mainland manufacturers who can tailor their products to meet local needs.
Pan emphasized that by understanding and addressing the specific requirements of Hong Kong’s transportation sector, mainland companies can position themselves as viable alternatives. With growing cost pressures and a need for more affordable options, this could mark a turning point for mainland bus makers looking to gain a stronger foothold in the region.
