China's top ten car manufacturers have significantly reduced market share

According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in the first quarter of this year, the top ten car producers in China saw some changes in their rankings. One new entrant and one exit were observed, reflecting a more dynamic market landscape. As the number of automakers entering the competition continues to grow, the market share of the top ten sedan manufacturers has declined significantly. Last year, Fengshen Automobile ranked ninth among the top ten sedan manufacturers, but it failed to make the list in the first quarter of this year. On the other hand, FAW Car made its debut in the top ten this year. In the first three months, FAW Car produced 19,546 vehicles and sold 16,533 units, marking an impressive increase of 137.58% and 114.07%, respectively, compared to the same period last year. The top four positions remained largely unchanged, with Shanghai Volkswagen, FAW-Volkswagen, Shanghai GM, and Tianjin FAW Xiali continuing to dominate. However, Changan Automobile climbed from seventh to fifth place, while Guangzhou Honda moved up to sixth from fifth. SAIC Chery dropped to seventh, and Shenlong Automobile took the eighth spot, previously held by Bajin. Beijing Hyundai fell to tenth, overtaken by FAW Car. Notably, both Tianjin FAW Xiali and Shenlong Automobile experienced a decline in production and sales compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, eight of the top ten manufacturers reported growth in their output and sales figures. As of the end of last year, there were 32 car manufacturers operating in China—12 more than in 2002. This growing competition has led to a noticeable drop in the market share of the top ten companies. Their combined production share fell from 78.8% in the previous year to 72%, while their sales share dropped from 80.5% to 74%. Despite these shifts, China’s automotive industry continued its strong performance in the first quarter of this year. Total production reached 579,900 units, and sales hit 567,000 units, showing a year-on-year increase of 41.86% and 44.47%, respectively. The industry remains highly competitive, with new players constantly challenging the established leaders.
