This report comes from Larry Shapiro:
The Gurnee Fire Department responded to a fire call at 17434 West Walnut around midday. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered flames engulfing one unit of a six-unit townhouse complex. As the fire quickly spread to neighboring units, the initial response was upgraded to a Box Alarm and later escalated further to a Second Alarm. Thanks to the firefighters’ swift and determined efforts, they managed to contain the blaze before it reached the last unit.
Unfortunately, three firefighters sustained minor injuries during the operation. Several residents also sought medical attention on-site and signed medical release forms.
Mutual aid was provided by various departments including Beach Park, Grayslake, Mundelein, Waukegan, and Libertyville. Round Lake sent a ladder truck, while Fox Lake contributed a rescue squad. Additionally, four mutual aid ambulances from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Lake Villa, Long Grove, and Zion were present at the scene to assist with emergency services and transport needs.
Attached are images captured by Larry Shapiro as well as some photos shared by local residents or bystanders who witnessed the incident. One particularly striking image shows fire bursting through the second-floor window of the affected unit at 17432 Walnut Lane. Other shots provide a closer look at the damage caused by the blaze and the intense firefighting efforts.

It's always heartbreaking to see such incidents unfold, but it's inspiring to witness how quickly and efficiently first responders work under pressure. My thoughts go out to everyone involved—both the brave firefighters who put themselves in harm's way and the residents who lost part of their homes. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery for all impacted by this event.
