I just got back from covering an intense barn fire out in Barrington Hills. The scene was absolutely chaotic but also fascinating to watch. The firefighters did an incredible job managing the situation, especially given the challenges of accessing water in such an open area.
One of the most striking moments was watching the massive water tankers rolling in one after another, dumping their loads into portable tanks set up by the Forest Preserve. It was a true testament to teamwork and coordination under pressure. Larry Shapiro’s photos really capture the scale and intensity of the operation.
I particularly liked how the firefighters used Class A foam to douse the smoldering remains, which is always a critical step to ensure no hidden embers reignite later. You could see the white smoke rising from where the barn once stood, a stark reminder of what had been lost.
The logistics behind the water shuttle were mind-blowing. I watched as the supply officer expertly managed the flow of tankers, ensuring there was never a break in the chain. Meanwhile, the engines were busy drafting water from those portable tanks, ready to go at a moment's notice.
It wasn’t just the big equipment that caught my attention though. There were moments when you’d see a lone firefighter adjusting a hose line or checking gauges, completely focused on the task at hand. These small details really bring home the dedication and skill involved in firefighting.
And let’s not forget the Arlington Heights Ambulance team standing by—always prepared for anything. Their new rig looked sharp and ready to roll, which is reassuring for everyone involved.
