Enel X Way has officially announced the closure of its EV charging operations in the U.S. and Canada, effective October 11, 2024. This means that all residential JuiceBox chargers will no longer function as smart devices and will revert to basic home charging units. Similarly, commercial Enel X Way chargers will lose all functionality once their software support is terminated. In response to this development, ChargeLab, a leading provider of backend management software for commercial EV charging networks, is offering to take over compatible commercial chargers across the U.S. and Canada. Site hosts affected by the shutdown are strongly encouraged to reach out to ChargeLab immediately to explore migration options before the Enel X Way servers are permanently taken offline. The JuiceBox charger was first introduced in 2013 by eMotorWerks, a California-based startup. In 2017, eMotorWerks was acquired by Enel S.p.A., an Italian energy giant. The product then became part of Enel’s broader strategy to expand into North America through electric vehicle charging, energy storage, and other distributed energy solutions. However, Enel has now decided to refocus its efforts on regions where it has an electricity retail presence, primarily Europe. ChargeLab is a platform designed to manage EV chargers at scale, supporting a wide range of hardware from multiple manufacturers. While they don’t compete directly with Enel X Way, their OCPP-based back office system works with over 100 different charger models. They’ve been testing compatibility with Enel X Way chargers in anticipation of this potential shutdown and have been in communication with Enel X Way’s team up until the official announcement. “We understand the urgency and frustration our customers are facing,” said Shaun Stewart, President of ChargeLab. “We’re prioritizing migration support for Enel X Way users and urge them to contact us as soon as possible.” Migrating to ChargeLab can help site hosts maintain their charging services post-October 11. However, residential JuiceBox users may find the migration process too complex and not worth the effort. ChargeLab recommends that utilities and DERMS aggregators remove JuiceBox chargers from approved lists for programs like time-of-use billing and demand response. Despite Enel X Way’s exit from North America, the shift toward electric vehicles continues to gain momentum. Companies like ChargeLab are stepping in to ensure that EV charging remains reliable, scalable, and user-friendly. If you're a commercial site host using Enel X Way chargers, now is the time to act. Contact ChargeLab today at (800) 636-0986 ext. 210 to start the transition.
