Enel X Way has officially announced the closure of its EV charging operations in the United States and Canada, effective October 11, 2024. This means that all residential JuiceBox chargers will no longer function as smart devices and will revert to basic home charging units. Meanwhile, commercial Enel X Way chargers will lose all functionality once their software support is discontinued.
In response to this development, ChargeLab, a leading provider of back-end management software for commercial EV charging networks, is offering to take over compatible commercial chargers across North America. Site hosts who rely on Enel X Way’s services are urged to reach out to ChargeLab immediately to explore migration options before the company’s servers are permanently shut down.
Enel X Way first launched the JuiceBox in 2013, developed by eMotorWerks, a California-based startup. The company was acquired by Enel S.p.A., an Italian energy giant, in 2017. Since then, JuiceBox became part of Enel X, which later rebranded to Enel X Way. The acquisition was part of Enel’s broader strategy to expand into North America through EV charging and other distributed energy solutions.
Now, Enel is shifting its focus back to Europe, where it already has an established electricity retail presence. This decision has left many commercial site hosts in a difficult position, with only a short notice period before their systems become non-functional.
ChargeLab offers a hardware-agnostic platform designed to manage EV chargers at scale. Their system supports over 100 different charger models from major manufacturers like ABB, Eaton, and Wallbox. They have been working closely with Enel X Way’s North American team to ensure a smooth transition for affected customers.
“We understand the urgency and frustration our customers are facing,†said Shaun Stewart, President of ChargeLab. “Our priority is to help Enel X Way users migrate to our platform as quickly and smoothly as possible. We encourage anyone impacted to contact us today.â€
While migrating residential JuiceBox units is not recommended due to technical limitations, commercial site hosts are strongly advised to act now. ChargeLab also recommends that utilities and DERMS aggregators remove JuiceBox chargers from their approved equipment lists for programs like time-of-use billing and demand response.
Despite Enel X Way’s exit from North America, the trend of electric vehicle adoption continues to grow. Companies like ChargeLab are stepping up to ensure that EV charging remains reliable, scalable, and accessible for drivers across the region.
If you're a commercial site host using Enel X Way, don’t wait—contact ChargeLab today to discuss your options. For more information, call (800) 636-0986 ext. 210.
