A new oil grade, SAE 16, is set to enter the passenger car market and may soon be available for all new Toyota models. This development could lead to improved fuel efficiency, with some reports suggesting that vehicles using this oil might see a noticeable increase in miles per gallon (MPG).
This new oil grade was developed following a request from a group of passenger car manufacturers who wanted an alternative to the traditional SAE 20 grade. The goal is to reduce internal engine friction, which can help improve fuel economy in modern, more efficient engines.
According to Michael Covitch, Chair of the SAE International Engine Oil Viscosity Classification (EOVC) task force, “The main driving force for using lower-viscosity oils is to lower hydrodynamic friction, thereby increasing fuel economy.â€
SAE chose the number 16 instead of following the usual five-step scale to avoid confusion among consumers. Previously, oil grades were labeled in increments of five, such as 10, 15, 20, etc. Now, with the introduction of SAE 16, it allows for smaller steps like 12, 8, or 4, making it easier to fine-tune performance. Importantly, the system still maintains the standard low-temperature ratings marked with a “W†for winter use.
