A new oil grade, SAE 16, is set to enter the passenger car market and may soon be available for all new Toyota models. This innovative viscosity grade has the potential to improve fuel efficiency, offering drivers better miles per gallon (MPG) when used in modern, more efficient engines.

This new oil grade was developed following a request from a group of passenger car manufacturers who wanted an alternative to the traditional SAE 20 grade. The goal was to create a lower-viscosity oil that could reduce internal engine friction, leading to improved fuel economy. After thorough evaluation, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) approved the new SAE 16 standard.
Michael Covitch, Chair of the SAE International Engine Oil Viscosity Classification (EOVC) task force and a representative from Lubrizol, explained that the main reason for adopting lower-viscosity oils is to reduce hydrodynamic friction, which in turn boosts fuel efficiency.
One of the key reasons SAE chose the number 16 instead of continuing with the traditional five-step scale is to avoid confusion with existing grades like SAE 15W-40, commonly used in heavy-duty diesel vehicles. Now, manufacturers can offer options like SAE 12, 8, or 4, making it easier for consumers to understand the differences between oil viscosities.
Additionally, the new numbering system allows SAE to maintain their established high- and low-temperature grading system, where the "W" stands for "winter." This ensures that consumers still have clear guidance on which oil is suitable for different climates.
For the average driver, staying informed about the recommended oil type for their vehicle is essential.
