Skokie Fire Department has recently introduced a brand-new ambulance to Station 18. This 2009/2010 model is the first Horton unit to be deployed in Skokie, marking a shift from the previous Medtec units and even earlier Road Rescue models. The department follows a procurement process through the Northwest Municipal Conference Suburban Purchasing Cooperative, which maintains a list of approved suppliers. At the time of this order, Horton was on that list, along with other manufacturers like Wheeled Coach and Foster Coach/Medtec—though that particular list has since expired. The new Horton Type I ambulance represents an upgrade in both technology and design. It’s now the primary unit at Station 18, replacing the older 2003 Medtec ambulance, which has been reclassified as Ambulance 17R. In turn, the 2000 Road Rescue unit, previously known as Ambulance 17R, was traded in. This transition ensures that the department continues to operate with modern, reliable equipment. Photos of the new ambulance show its striking exterior, featuring full chevron striping and LED lighting, giving it a professional and visible presence on the road. Inside, the layout is designed for efficiency, with all necessary medical equipment and space for both paramedics and patients. If you’re interested in seeing more details, there's a photo of the interior available, as well as a rear view showcasing the ambulance’s updated look. Additionally, a long-missing photo of the Ford/Taylor Made command unit for Battalion 16 has now been added to the site, offering a complete visual record of the department’s fleet.
