Skokie Fire Department has recently received a new ambulance for Station 18. This 2009/2010 model marks the first time Skokie has acquired a Horton ambulance, as previous units were Medtec models, and before that, they used Road Rescue ambulances. The department purchases equipment through the Northwest Municipal Conference Suburban Purchasing Cooperative, and at the time of this order, Horton was on their approved supplier list. Other vendors like Wheeled Coach and Foster Coach/Medtec were also included on that list, though it has since expired.
The new Horton Type I unit is a significant upgrade, offering improved features and functionality for emergency responders. The previous ambulance, a 2003 Medtec unit, has been reclassified as Ambulance 17R, while the older 2000 Road Rescue ambulance, which had previously served as Ambulance 17R, was traded in.
Inside, the new ambulance is equipped with modern medical equipment and a well-designed layout to support paramedics during critical situations. The exterior features full chevron striping and LED lighting, making it highly visible and professional-looking. Several photos have been added to showcase the new unit from different angles, including the passenger side and the rear view with its striking design.
Additionally, the Ford/Taylor Made command unit for Battalion 16, which had been missing from the site, is now available for viewing. You can check out the photo HERE to see what the unit looks like in action. Overall, this new ambulance represents an important step forward for Skokie’s emergency services, ensuring better care and response times for residents.
