The U.S. market research firm Freedonia Group recently published a report forecasting the growth of plastic sheet demand in the American market. According to the report, the demand for plastic sheets is expected to grow at an annual rate of nearly 3% over the next few years. In 2011, total consumption is projected to reach 7.7 billion pounds (about 3.49 million tons), with the market valued at $7.2 billion.
Freedonia notes that several factors will influence this demand, including the growth of food packaging, the shift toward paper alternatives, rising consumer expectations for aesthetics, improvements in resin performance, and the increasing use of multi-material combinations driven by technological advances. Additionally, traditional applications are still showing growth potential, though the recycling of large and used plastic packaging has been growing at around 2.9% annually before 2011.
Looking ahead, polystyrene is expected to remain a key player due to its cost-effectiveness and performance in hot-pressed food packaging. Nearly half of all plastic sheets used in 2011 will be polystyrene, followed by polyethylene and polyester. Demand for these materials is also expected to rise due to increased use in plastic bottles, cups, trays, and aluminum-plastic packaging. However, PVC sheet demand is anticipated to decline, partly due to efforts to reduce single-family housing construction, which may lower the need for plastic flooring and roofing.
From an application standpoint, Freedonia remains optimistic about the food packaging sector. The U.S. market for plastic sheets in this area is forecasted to reach 3.8 billion pounds in 2011, with an average annual growth rate of 3.6%. The pharmaceutical packaging segment also shows strong potential, as the growing use of aluminum-plastic packaging is expected to boost demand for plastic sheets. Overall, the industry is poised for steady expansion, driven by evolving consumer needs and material innovations.
