The U.S. market research firm Freedonia Group has recently published a forecast report on the future demand for plastic sheets in the American market. According to the report, the demand for plastic sheets is expected to grow at an annual rate of nearly 3% over the next few years. In 2011, total consumption is projected to reach 7.7 billion pounds (about 3.49 million tons), with the market value reaching $7.2 billion. Freedonia highlights that several factors will influence the demand for plastic sheets. These include the rising use in food packaging, the shift from paper to plastics, increasing consumer preferences for aesthetics, advancements in resin technology, and the growing trend of using multiple materials together. Additionally, the growth potential of traditional applications remains significant. Before 2011, the recycling of large and used plastic packaging contributed to an average annual growth rate of about 2.9%. The report also notes that polystyrene is expected to maintain strong demand due to its cost-effectiveness and performance in hot-pressed food packaging. Nearly half of all plastic sheets used in 2011 are expected to be polystyrene. Demand for polyethylene and polyester sheets is also anticipated to rise, driven by the need for plastic bottles, cups, trays, and aluminum-plastic packaging. However, PVC sheet demand is expected to decline as the U.S. government pushes for fewer single-family homes, potentially reducing the need for plastic flooring and roofing materials. From an application standpoint, Freedonia is optimistic about the food packaging sector. The report forecasts that plastic sheet demand in this area will reach 3.8 billion pounds in 2011, with an average annual growth rate of 3.6%. Similarly, pharmaceutical packaging is seen as having strong growth potential, with the increasing use of aluminum-plastic packaging further boosting demand for plastic sheets.
