The Smithsonian Arts + Industries Building (AIB), America’s first national museum, has been closed for nearly two decades. A few years ago, Autodesk learned that the space would soon reopen for a special exhibition celebrating the Smithsonian’s 175th anniversary. Now, that moment has arrived! Through July 2022, the AIB will transform into a dynamic space for exploring ideas and questions about the future. As a company deeply committed to empowering people to design a better world, we were excited to collaborate on this inspiring project.
FUTURES is a building-wide exhibition that blends awe-inspiring art, technology, design, and history. The Smithsonian invites visitors to dream big and imagine multiple possible futures. As part of FUTURES, we partnered with the Smithsonian AIB to create the Co-Lab — a unique space featuring a sustainably designed timber structure, stories highlighting the power of human-AI collaboration, and an interactive multiplayer experience called “Future Communities.â€
After years of planning, designing, and working with an incredible team of researchers, designers, architects, and curators, I’m thrilled to finally share what we’ve created with the public. In the Co-Lab, guests can play Future Communities, collaborating both with each other and AI to build a sustainable community block. This exhibit encourages visitors to think critically about the future of cities and how design and technology can shape them.
The Future Communities experience invites participants to take on different roles — such as developer, ecologist, or mayor — each with unique goals and considerations. For example, the ecologist focuses on green spaces and clean air, while the developer creates housing and workspaces. The mayor ensures fair access to services for all residents. Each team has limited building tiles and must make thoughtful decisions, as resources are shared and limited.
AI plays a key role in guiding players by offering suggestions and assessing thousands of outcomes in real-time. Metrics like daylight, access to services, carbon footprint, and urban density help players make informed decisions. The evolving community block is displayed live, allowing teams to see the impact of their choices as they go.
This experience is designed to spark dialogue, encourage collaboration, and challenge visitors to harness AI insights to build a thriving future for all. What excites me most is the potential for AI and collaborative tools like Future Communities to bring people together, reduce individual biases, and find solutions that serve the greater good.
Working closely with Brad MacDonald, Director of Creative Media at Smithsonian AIB, I was struck by the power of people and AI working together to solve complex problems. As Brad said, “There’s never been an interactive exhibit like this. For the first time, we’ll see guests of all ages and backgrounds collaborate with each other and AI to design a sustainable city block. Diverse voices are vital to creating an equitable and sustainable future.â€
We can’t wait to see what people come up with and learn from their creative approaches. I hope you get the chance to try out Future Communities, put on the hat of a developer, ecologist, or mayor, and help design the neighborhood you’d love to see in the future!
